I've always hated moving, it's usually such a hassle and things seem to take forever. This time it was different. Well... I wasn't moving and neither was anybody else, but our storage-room for Entropy, a non-profit organization specializing in electronic music. We had 3 different storage rooms, two for sound and lights that we rent out, one for decorations/material for decorations and uhmm.. misc. junk as well it seemed. The problem with moving is that everybody seems so frustrated and hardly anybody really wants to help. This time, it started out the same, we had to build new shelves to the new storage-room and haul all stuff from the old storages to a room and do a complete inventory on what we had over there and what was missing etc. On saturday, we could have used a few extra pairs of hands for the things, but we got a lot done and all important stuff out of the storages and some inventory done. Then came sunday...
Again only a few people showed up and the primary thing was to get the shelves done, but doing all that stuff was actually really fun and although we had fallen behind, we got things done with a pace that bothered nobody, it made building pretty fun. And by the hour, more people showed up to help with things to do the inventory bit, to throw stuff out we did not need and finally, the shelves were done. A glorious moment! The storage-room looked great, all those shelves to fit stuff into, but when we really got things rolling and the stuff started coming in, it was even better. All the stuff in one place and organized so it may be found later on. Carrying stuff, organizing, marking them was somehow made fun. And here's my point: all the people that came and did those things made it fun, there was a feeling of a community working together and not just coming in when there's free booze/party but really doing something for the organization. I mean yeah, there have been parties, really good ones at that too.. but doing this was really fun even though there was no actual promise of a party afterwards or anything. Just hard work (and a new, better storage) yet it was great.
I really don't know which made me happier, the sense of doing some work and seeing the results or seeing that Entropy still makes things work.
The delirious rantings of a an adult child growing up...
